Do Plane tickets for colleges really cost a lot of money?

Do plane tickets to fly back like across country 3 times a year cost that much? My parents wont let me go to a college far because they claim it cost to much money to fly. Even if the college is cheaper then a college around my area they still are like its to much money. Do colleges give discounts and is it really a lot of money a year for plane tickets?
